Eminent social media influencer from Punjab, Manjit Kaur, succumbed to her injuries on August 26, almost two months after she was allegedly assaulted, was tied to a tree and was set ablaze in the state’s Moringa town, police reported on Saturday.

Kaur (28), died during treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in the city on August 26. According to police, they have registered a case under Sections 103(1) and 140 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the incident, and are probing the circumstances surrounding the attack launched on her, which led to her death.

Kaur kidnapped after being called to Chandigarh

Kaur’s mother had earlier filed a complaint, which states that she (Kaur) was allegedly kidnapped by two of her acquaintances, identified as Shubhi and Pinda, on July 3 this year.

The complaint further read that the duo called Kaur to an area near a liquor shop in Sector 34 of the city, and later took her to Morinda in Punjab. She was allegedly assaulted there, was tied to a tree and was set on fire.

In the aftermath of the incident, Kaur’s friend rushed to the scene and managed to douse off the flames using a blanket. Subsequently, she was taken to a hospital in Morinda for treatment. As she required specialised treatment, she was later shifted to a private hospital in Mohali, and was later referred to PGIMER in Chandigarh.

Mother alleges delay by cops in recording statement

Kaur’s mother alleged that her daughter regained consciousness on August 5, and that she had informed Kharar Police in Mohali of the incident, requesting the cops to record her statement. As per Kaur’s family, no police team arrived to record the influencer’s statement. On the other hand, police have rejected the allegations and maintained that they extended full cooperation to Kaur’s kin during the course of the probe.

Meanwhile, police officers are persevering in efforts to trace the ones allegedly involved in the attack. The cops said they are sifting through CCTV footage and other evidence as they work to piece together the sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding Kaur’s kidnapping.

Chandigarh’s Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), South, Gurjeet Kaur said the motive behind the killing has not been learnt yet.

Manhunt underway

According to police, a probe into the incident is underway and they are examining evidence as well as are trying to identify and apprehend the alleged assailants. Kaur had built a massive following on social media, with close to 1.46 lakh followers on Instagram. She regularly posted videos featuring Punjabi and Haryanvi songs.
