The Golden Temple in Amritsar, one of the most revered religious sites in Sikhism, has undertaken gold plating work on its entrance domes to enhance the shrine’s architectural beauty. The work involved applying layers of 24 carat gold over copper sheets, adding to the iconic golden appearance of Sri Harmandir Sahib.

The project was carried out through kar sewa, a form of voluntary religious service, with devotees contributing gold ornaments and money towards the work.

Four Entrance Domes Included in the Plan

In 2018, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages the historic shrine, announced plans to gold plate the domes of the temple’s four entrances. The project was estimated to require approximately 160 kilograms of gold, with an estimated value of ₹50 crore at the time.

The work began at the main entrance near Ghanta Ghar. The entrances hold particular significance because they symbolise the Sikh faith’s message of equality and openness to people from all communities.

How the Gold Plating Is Prepared

The gold plating process involves purifying donated gold, which is often received in the form of jewellery. The metal is refined to 24 carats, melted and processed into extremely thin sheets.

These sheets are then applied in multiple layers over specially prepared copper panels. The completed panels are installed on the domes, creating the distinctive golden finish associated with the shrine.

Devotees Contribute to Religious Service

The gold plating work reflects the long tradition of voluntary service and donations at the Golden Temple. Devotees contribute gold and funds to preserve and beautify the religious complex.

However, claims that entirely new gates made of solid 24 carat gold have recently been installed in Amritsar remain unverified. The documented work concerns gold plating over copper structures, rather than gates made entirely of solid gold.
