India yet again lost one of its most revered folk artistes, as the legendary Pandavani exponent Teejan Bai, passed away on Sunday following a prolonged illness. The decorated singer, who was 70 years old, breathed her last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur, where she had been admitted for treatment since May 27, 2026.

A native of the state’s Durg district, Teejan Bai gained critical acclaim as the foremost practitioner of Pandavani, the province’s traditional narrative folk art which brings episodes from the Mahabharata to life through dramatic storytelling, soulful singing and musical accompaniment. 

Her demise marks the end of a remarkable chapter in India’s cultural history.

Renowned for her commanding voice, expressive performances and a gripping stage presence, Teejan Bai transformed Pandavani from a regional storytelling tradition into an internationally recognised art form. Over a period of several decades, she enthralled audiences across India and overseas, introducing the richness of Chhattisgarh’s cultural heritage to the world. 

Her performances exuded emotion, energy and theatrical brilliance, owing to which she bagged widespread acclaim and established herself as one of India’s most distinguished folk artistes. Through her unwavering dedication, she ensured that an age-old tradition found appreciation far beyond its place of origin.

The celebrated artist’s unmatched contribution to Indian folk arts was recognised with some of India’s highest civilian honours. She was conferred with the Padma Shri, followed by the revered Padma Bhushan, and later the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.

After her demise, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi expressed profound grief on ‘X’, terming her passing as an irreparable loss to the world of art and culture.

He wrote that the legendary artiste gave Chhattisgarh’s folk art a distinct global identity by means of her stellar performances. He extended condolences to her family, admirers and countless followers, adding that her contribution to Indian cultural heritage would always be remembered.
