India have suffered a setback ahead of the third T20 International against New Zealand, with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan ruled out of the upcoming match due to an injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development on Monday, October 26, 2026, stating that the batter has not yet regained full match fitness.
The third T20I is scheduled to take place in Wellington on Tuesday, October 27, as India look to continue their winning run in the five-match series.

Right Thigh Injury Keeps Kishan Out
Kishan sustained a low-grade right adductor strain during the opening T20I against New Zealand. The injury also forced him to miss the second match of the series.
According to the BCCI, the left-handed batter is recovering well, but the medical team is continuing to monitor his progress. The team management has decided against rushing him back into action before he is fully fit for competitive cricket.
The board confirmed that Kishan would miss the Wellington fixture and that his recovery would remain under medical supervision.

Kumar Kushagra Retained as Cover
With Kishan unavailable, wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra will continue to remain with the Indian squad for the third T20I. He was initially brought in as cover following Kishan’s injury ahead of the second match.
Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi featured in the playing XI during the second T20I in Kishan’s absence. The team management will now have to consider its combination for the upcoming match.

India Aim to Extend Their Lead
India currently lead the five-match T20I series 2-0 after winning the first two encounters against New Zealand. Both victories came by four wickets.
A win in Wellington would give India an unassailable 3-0 lead and secure the series with two matches remaining.
While Kishan’s absence presents a selection challenge, India’s immediate focus will be on maintaining their winning momentum and strengthening their position in the series.
