Jamia Millia Islamia has agreed to resume students’ union elections after nearly two decades, announcing that polling will take place within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution.

The university has also revoked suspension and show-cause notices issued to students during the recent protests and promised an inquiry into the conduct of security personnel.

The decision was announced in an official order issued by the university registrar on Monday, October 26, following days of protests and hunger strikes by students demanding the restoration of an elected students’ union. Elections have not been held at the university since 2006.

Suspension Notices Withdrawn, Inquiry Ordered

As part of the decision, the administration revoked disciplinary notices issued to students during the agitation. It also announced that a committee would be formed to investigate the actions of security staff during the protest period.

The move addresses three major demands raised by protesting students: the restoration of student union elections, withdrawal of disciplinary action and an inquiry into the conduct of security personnel.

Students Asked to End Protest

The university’s order also records an undertaking by the protesting students to issue a public apology through a press conference for any defamatory statements, actions or social media posts directed against the administration during the agitation.

The students have also been asked to remove such posts from social media platforms. The order directed that the protest be called off immediate
