He took the oath at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, which was administered by Governor Vishwanath Arlekar.

The ceremony saw an outpouring of emotion as thousands of his supporters cheered their beloved ‘Thalapathy.’ Many of them appeared to be moved, with scenes of celebrations and tears of joy filling the venue as the actor-turned-politician assumed charge of the office.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was present on the occasion, underlining the significance of the alliance that propelled Vijay to power. Notably, Vijay has become the state’s first CM since 1967 not affiliated with either the DMK or the AIADMK, putting an end to decades of bipolar political dominance in the state.

As per an official communication, the Governor has directed Vijay to prove his majority on the Assembly floor by May 13, 2026.

“A common man”: Here’s what Vijay said in his first address

In his maiden address, Vijay termed himself a ‘common man,’ emphasising his non-elite background as a key reason behind his success in the elections. The 51-year-old assured citizens that his administration would not rely on hollow promises.

He pledged to usher in ‘en era of real, secular, social justice,’ while urging the commoners to grant him reasonable time to deliver on his commitments.
