Heavy rainfall in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, disrupted road connectivity to the popular hill station, leaving cars and buses stranded for nearly two hours. The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, as tourists travelled to the destination for the busy weekend. Floodwater flowing across roads prevented vehicles from moving, causing significant inconvenience to travellers.

Floodwater Disrupts Traffic Near Silver Cascade Falls

According to reports, heavy rainfall caused a sudden surge of water near Silver Cascade Falls, one of Kodaikanal’s popular tourist attractions. Muddy water rushed down the hillside and spread across the road, disrupting traffic on routes connecting the hill station.

Cars and buses were forced to stop as water flowed across the affected stretch. Several vehicles remained stuck for close to two hours, leaving tourists waiting for conditions to improve before continuing their journeys.

Videos circulating on social media showed water flowing across the road, with vehicles lined up along the route. The incident highlighted the difficulties faced by travellers navigating hill roads during periods of intense rainfall.

Landslips and Fallen Trees Add to Travel Difficulties

The heavy rainfall also affected other parts of Kodaikanal and the surrounding hill regions. Reports indicated that landslips, fallen trees and road damage disrupted movement in several locations, including Shenbaganur and nearby areas.

The continuing downpour raised concerns about road safety, particularly on steep and winding mountain routes. Damage to electricity poles also reportedly caused power disruptions in some areas.

Authorities Advise Tourists to Avoid Travel

Amid the continuing rainfall and risk of further landslips, authorities advised tourists to avoid travelling to Kodaikanal and Thandikudi for the next two days. The advisory came as weather conditions remained unfavourable across parts of Tamil Nadu’s hill districts.

The India Meteorological Department’s rainfall warnings also highlighted the possibility of further heavy showers in vulnerable areas.

Weekend Travel Plans Hit by Heavy Rain

Kodaikanal attracts visitors throughout the year for its scenic hills, pleasant climate and popular tourist spots. However, the latest spell of heavy rainfall disrupted weekend travel plans and raised concerns about road conditions.

Travellers have been advised to check weather updates and follow official instructions before heading towards hill stations during periods of heavy rain.
