A major theft incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Berasia area has disrupted electricity and water supply after unidentified thieves dismantled a 33 KV high tension transformer and stole valuable components worth an estimated ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh.

The incident took place in Virha Thamkhedi village under Berasia tehsil, dealing a severe blow to the power department and affecting thousands of residents.

According to officials, the theft occurred during the night of June 16 and 17. The culprits allegedly cut the distribution wires to shut down the electricity supply before opening the transformer and making away with copper coils, plates and transformer oil.

The stolen material is believed to be highly valuable, leading to substantial financial losses.

Water Supply in Berasia Affected

The damaged transformer was connected to a filtration plant responsible for supplying water to Berasia town. As a result, the disruption in electricity also halted water distribution, causing inconvenience to thousands of people dependent on the municipal supply.

Residents reportedly faced difficulties due to the interruption, while authorities initiated efforts to restore power and ensure the resumption of water services at the earliest.

Loss Estimated Between ₹10 Lakh and ₹20 Lakh

Officials said the value of the stolen components is estimated to be between ₹10 lakh and ₹20 lakh. The incident has raised serious concerns over the safety and security of electrical infrastructure in rural areas.

Power department personnel are assessing the extent of the damage and preparing for the replacement and repair of the affected equipment. The theft has not only caused financial losses but has also disrupted essential public services.

Repeated Incidents Raise Security Concerns

This is not the first instance of theft targeting electricity infrastructure in the region. Earlier, on March 30, 2026, miscreants reportedly stole aluminium wires from electricity poles located between Daledar and Peeplakheda villages in the Gunga area.

The recurrence of such crimes has prompted questions regarding the effectiveness of existing security measures and the vulnerability of power installations situated in isolated locations.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are expected to investigate the latest theft and identify those responsible. The repeated targeting of power assets has underscored the need for stronger surveillance and improved protection mechanisms to prevent disruptions to critical infrastructure and safeguard essential services relied upon by the public.
