Preserving Madhya Pradesh’s religious and cultural heritage and introducing future generations to its glorious past remains a key priority of the state government, state’s Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav said while reviewing ongoing development and restoration works in Orchha.
CM Dr Yadav said the historic town of Orchha is being developed as an exceptional tourism destination, with the grand Shri Ram Raja Lok project expected to strengthen Bundelkhand’s identity while giving a boost to the local economy and creating employment opportunities.

Focus on heritage-led tourism
The Chief Minister inspected the ongoing construction work at Shri Ram Raja Lok, one of Orchha’s prominent religious and heritage centres, and reviewed its progress. He directed officials to ensure that all works are completed within the stipulated deadline without compromising on quality.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, CM Dr Yadav described the Ram Raja Temple as a valuable symbol of Orchha’s glorious historical and cultural legacy. He said the town’s temples and palaces are living examples of the architectural excellence of their era and continue to connect people with India’s ancient heritage and culture.
Highlighting the sophistication of the historic structures, CM Dr Yadav said several buildings in Orchha were designed in a manner that kept them cool during summer and warm during winter, despite having been built in an era when modern air-conditioning systems did not exist.
Ancient structures to retain original character
During his visit to the developing Ram Raja Lok complex, CM Dr Yadav interacted with shopkeepers and operators of various establishments, heard their concerns and suggestions, and instructed officials to take necessary steps to address their issues.
He also inspected construction and restoration work underway at Jujhar Singh Mahal and visited Jahangir Mahal, where he observed Orchha’s rich historical architecture.
An architect accompanying the Chief Minister briefed him on the conservation of the ancient Sawan-Bhado pillars located within the temple complex. Officials said special care is being taken to preserve the original character and historical significance of these structures while shaping the Ram Raja Lok project.
The pillars, regarded as symbols of Bundelkhand’s distinctive architectural tradition, showcase the advanced construction techniques of their time. The surrounding area is being developed in a systematic and aesthetically appealing manner while ensuring that the ancient structures suffer no damage and remain easily accessible to devotees.
Religious tourism to drive local economy
CM Dr Yadav said Orchha, once recognised as the capital of the illustrious Bundela rulers, possesses ancient palaces and buildings that represent the region’s rich heritage. The government, he said, is working to revive these structures using materials similar to those used during their original construction, with the aim of retaining their historic appearance.
He added that skilled craftsmen are undertaking the restoration work under the guidance of officials. Referring to the development of Shri Mahakal Mahalok in Ujjain, CM Dr Yadav said the project had led to a significant rise in the number of devotees visiting the city and brought major changes to its economy.

On similar lines, the state is pursuing the integrated development of major religious destinations including Orchha, Chitrakoot, Datia, Nalkheda and Pashupatinath in Mandsaur. The government also plans to connect major religious and historical sites across Madhya Pradesh. Places associated with Lord Ram’s 14-year exile, particularly Chitrakoot, as well as sites linked to Lord Krishna, including the Sandipani Ashram in Ujjain, are proposed to be developed as pilgrimage destinations.
CM Dr Yadav said preserving the state’s religious and cultural heritage and connecting future generations with this legacy is a priority. The grand Shri Ram Raja Lok in Orchha, he added, is envisioned as a major pilgrimage destination for devotees from across India and around the world.
