The birth anniversary of Madhya Pradesh's first Chief Minister, the late Pandit Ravishankar Shukla, was commemorated with solemn tributes at the Central Hall of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Sunday. State Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav led the homage, describing the veteran statesman as a visionary leader whose historic decision to make Bhopal the state capital played a pivotal role in safeguarding national unity during a turbulent chapter in India's history.
The commemorative ceremony, held at 10 am, was attended by members of the State Cabinet, legislators and senior government officials. The dignitaries offered floral tributes before a portrait of Pandit Ravishankar Shukla, remembering his enduring contribution to the formation and development of modern Madhya Pradesh.

'Historic decision strengthened national unity'
Addressing the gathering, CM Dr Yadav recalled the political uncertainty that followed India's Partition in 1947. He said that the erstwhile princely state of Bhopal had, at the time, expressed its desire to join Pakistan.
According to the Chief Minister, it was during this sensitive period that Pandit Ravishankar Shukla displayed remarkable foresight by ensuring that Bhopal became the capital of Madhya Pradesh. CM Dr Yadav stated that the decision effectively thwarted anti-national and separatist designs while reinforcing the unity and territorial integrity of both the state and the country.
He described the move as one of the defining moments in the state's political history, crediting Shukla's leadership with laying a strong foundation for a united Madhya Pradesh.

The Chief Minister said Pandit Ravishankar Shukla should be remembered not merely as the state's first Chief Minister but as the architect of modern Madhya Pradesh. He noted that the veteran leader introduced several landmark initiatives across education, irrigation, industrial development and administrative reforms.
CM Dr Yadav remarked that many of the policies implemented under Shukla's leadership continue to benefit the state even today. He added that the late leader's progressive outlook, administrative acumen and commitment to public welfare remain an inspiration for successive generations.
State's development journey continues
Highlighting the present government's achievements, CM Dr Yadav said Madhya Pradesh is scaling new heights of development under the leadership of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.
He informed the gathering that the state had secured the country's top honour in the horticulture sector, reflecting sustained progress in agricultural diversification. Investment inflows, he added, continue to rise steadily, signalling growing confidence in Madhya Pradesh's economic potential.
The Chief Minister further stated that the state government had achieved a record procurement of wheat from 1.4 million farmers, describing it as a historic milestone for the agriculture sector and a testament to the government's commitment to farmers' welfare.

Concluding the ceremony, CM Dr Yadav paid a heartfelt tribute to Pandit Shukla on behalf of the Madhya Pradesh Government. He said the late leader's ideals of patriotism, public service and dedicated governance would continue to inspire future generations.
The Chief Minister urged the people of Madhya Pradesh to follow Shukla's path and contribute actively towards the state's continued development and the larger goal of nation-building. He said preserving the values championed by the state's founding leader would remain essential in shaping a stronger, more prosperous and united Madhya Pradesh.
