The political temperature soared in Tamil Nadu on Friday after state police arrested senior DMK leader and Tiruchendur MLA Nitha R. Radhakrishnan for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the state’s Chief Minister (CM) and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President C. Joseph Vijay.

DMK MLA Radhakrishnan

The arrest was made shortly after the Madras High Court (HC) junked Radhakrishnan’s anticipatory bail plea in the case stemming from the comments which he allegedly made during a public meeting held on June 20, 2026. The veteran politician, who has served as a minister in the previous MK Stalin-led government, maintained that the case is politically motivated.

HC rejects anticipatory bail plea

Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan dismissed the petition filed by the seven-time MLA, leading to his arrest. As per the plea filed by Radhakrishnan, it was mentioned that the June 20 gathering was organised by the DMK to hear public grievances and discuss issues affecting the general public.

He submitted that his speech was centred on analysing public’s dissent with the policies and action of the ruling TVK and was delivered in his capacity as an experienced legislator concerned about the state’s welfare.

The MLA further contended that the complaint was filed against him over political vendetta and termed the proceedings an act of political recrimination rather than a genuine legal grievance.

Dramatic scenes unfold during arrest

Soon after the HC’s decision, local police detained Radhakrishnan. The arrest saw tense scenes as scores of DMK supporters congregated at the spot, attempting to prevent the cops from whisking away the MLA. Despite the resistance, the police managed to arrest him and escorted him away.

Political tensions flare

Earlier this week, the Vijay-led TN government had reportedly urged Governor RV Arlekar to clear files seeking sanction for legal action against Radhakrishnan and another senior DMK leader, Senthil Balaji.
