Cricket updates: The South African cricket team displayed a dominant all-round performance against New Zealand in the opening match of the five-game T20 International series on Sunday, claiming the match by seven wickets. The match took place at Bay Oval, where South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the series.

The Kiwis opted to bat first, but struggled against a disciplined bowling attack by South Africa. They were bundled out for just 91 runs in 14.3 overs. Notably, no batter from the team was able to cross 30 runs. All-rounder James Neesham stood as the top scorer with 26 runs off 21 deliveries, smashing two fours and a six. Skipper Mitchell Santner disappointed with just 15 runs off 19 balls, while Cole McConchie secured 15 runs for 11 balls. With the dismal run score, the Kiwis failed to build meaningful partnerships.



SA debutant Mokoena shines with the ball


19-year-old debutant Nqobani Mokoena, represented South Africa and impressed with figures of 3/26 in his first T20I appearance. Gerald Coetzee (2/14), Ottneil Baartman (2/22) and captain Keshav Maharaj (2/25) assisted him well, as the Proteas bowlers dismantled the New Zealand batting line-up.



Connor Esterhuizen anchors comfortable chase

Chasing a modest 92-run-target, batter-wicketkeeper Connor Esterhuizen anchored the innings with 45* off 48 balls, striking two sixes and two fours. South Africa easily outnumbered the target within 16.4 overs, sealing the match by seven wickets. Mokoena, who was conferred with the title of the ‘Player of the Match’, expressed his delight over a memorable debut. He said he enjoyed bowling in helpful conditions and was pleased to contribute to the team’s victory.
