Tamil Nadu Chief Minister (CM) C Joseph Vijay on Thursday flagged off 300 newly-procured diesel and CNG buses for the state’s transport corporations, providing a boost to the public transport infrastructure. The launch event was staged at the State Secretariat in Chennai, where the state’s top political leader inducted the vehicles into service before delighting onlookers with an impromptu ride aboard one of the new buses.

Shortly after flagging off the fleet, CM Vijay boarded one of the newly-launched buses and took a ride through Chennai. Videos from his ride quickly began making rounds on social media, showing him seated in the front section of the vehicle, interacting with officials and observing the features provided in the bus.
Vijay, in the viral videos, was also seen recording videos on his cell phone during the trip. The gesture added a personal touch to the official event and generated considerable interest online.
CM Vijay’s move to personally inspect the vehicle underlined the government’s emphasis on improving public transport services and ensuring the quality of the newly-inducted buses.
Deployment plan still unannounced
While the buses have been inducted into the fleet of the state’s transport corporations, authorities have still not revealed how the vehicles will be distributed across districts or transport divisions.
Transport officials said that the allocation of the buses will be done on the basis of operational requirements, passenger demand and the condition of existing fleets in different regions. Moreover, no district-wise breakdown has been released so far.
