Malayalam actor Vinayakan has landed in legal trouble after Alappuzha district’s Mavelikkara Police in Kerala registered a First Information Report (FIR) against him over an alleged Facebook post involving a minor girl, officials reported on Friday.

According to police, the FIR was registered after directives were issued by the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights regarding the examination of a complaint alleging the unauthorised use of a child’s photograph on social media.

The complaint alleges that the actor shared a photograph of an 8-year-old girl on the social media platform Facebook without her family’s consent. The post is also alleged to have contained the child’s father’s cell phone number along with objectionable remarks, resulting in harassment from unknown callers.

The alleged incident dates back to July 2025 and recently came to the cognisance of the Kerala Child Rights Commission during its sitting in Alappuzha.

Dad alleges kid’s pic was shared without consent

As per a report by Mathrubhumi, the complaint was filed by a man, a native of Thazhakara, who is currently employed in Mumbai.

The complainant alleged that he had earlier circulated a Facebook post concerning Vinayakan through WhatsApp. Subsequently, the actor allegedly uploaded a screenshot of the WhatsApp conversation on Facebook. The snap reportedly displayed the complainant’s WhatsApp Display Picture (DP), which featured his 8-year-old daughter.

The father further alleged that the Facebook post revealed his personal contact number and included objectionable comments.

Following the post, the complainant alleged he began receiving relentless calls from unknown people, some of whom allegedly abused him after obtaining his number from the online post. Seeking legal action, the complainant approached the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. After the matter was reviewed thoroughly, the commission ordered the Mavelikkara Police to initiate legal proceedings against Vinayakan.

Cops invoke legal provisions

On the basis of the commission’s directions, the police registered a case against Vinayakan under provisions pertaining to insulting the modesty of a woman, along with relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The cops are expected to examine the social media post, digital records and other evidence as part of the probe. Officials, however, have not revealed further details regarding the progress of the probe, and additional information is awaited.

Vinayakan landed in controversies earlier too

Notably, this is not the first time Vinayakan has found himself at the centre of a controversy. Earlier too, the actor has drawn flak over several public remarks and his activity on social media.

Vinayakan's another picture

Despite the latest legal developments, Vinayakan is active professionally. On the work front, he is set to feature in Jailer 2, the much-awaited sequel headlined by Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth. The film recently unveiled a special glimpse featuring Vinayakan, creating a massive buzz among fans ahead of its release.
