Delhi Police have arrested social media content creator Muhammad Amir, popularly known as Amir Shokeen, in Karol Bagh over an allegedly racist video targeting a youth from Tripura.
The incident triggered widespread outrage, prompting Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to demand action against the accused.
Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Sadar Bazar police station under Sections 192, 196, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Tripura Police also registered a separate case, and both forces are coordinating their investigations.
Video Sparks Racial Discrimination Concerns
The viral video allegedly shows Shokeen making derogatory remarks about a young man from Tripura, mocking his appearance and ethnic identity. The youth was identified in reports as Lesenjit Reang, a resident of North Tripura.
The incident drew criticism from student organisations and community representatives, who called for an impartial investigation and accountability. Authorities are examining the video and related digital evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rijiju Condemns Alleged Conduct
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged remarks and called for strict action. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also directed the state police chief to coordinate with Delhi Police.
According to reports, Delhi Police invoked provisions relating to provocation with intent to cause a riot, promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult and statements that may cause public mischief. Tripura Police registered a separate case under relevant provisions of criminal law and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Accused Apologises; Probe Continues
Shokeen subsequently issued an apology, claiming the video was scripted and intended as humour. However, investigators are examining the circumstances of the recording and the roles of others who may have participated.
Police have also referred to previous cases involving the accused, including alleged physical altercations and molestation. These cases are separate from the current allegations and do not establish guilt in this matter. The investigation remains ongoing.
