Former Tamil actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister (CM) C Joseph Vijay’s farewell film, Jana Nayagan, appears to be inching closer to its theatrical release, as the film’s Canadian distributor indicated on Thursday that the movie will hit the theatres on July 24, 2026.

While the filmmakers are yet to announce the date officially, a social media post by Canada-based distributor York Cinemas has fuelled the speculation that the long-delayed project is finally gearing up for a worldwide release. If the date is confirmed, it will mark the culmination of months of uncertainty surrounding one of the most awaited Tamil films in recent years.
What did York Cinemas mention in its post?
The excitement picked up pace after York Cinemas announced the movie’s Canadian release on social media. The post uploaded by them online read, “Finally! Our own Thalapathy Vijay is ready to set the big screen on fire with #JanaNayagan. Canada Release by York Cinemas. Igniting screens from July 24.”
Although neither KVN Productions nor the film’s makers have confirmed the release date officially, the announcement is being seen as the clearest indication yet that Vijay’s exit project is targeting a worldwide theatrical release on July 24, 2026.
Notably, the film was originally set to release on January 9, 2026, during the Pongal festival. However, it ran into trouble after it reportedly failed to bag certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in time, leaving Vijay’s fans dismayed.

According to media reports, the film finally received a green signal a few days ago, after the regulatory body directed the filmmakers to delete several scenes and amend a few others. The film’s production house, while talking to Indian Express, said, “Once we complete those changes, we are hopeful of receiving the certification and bringing the film to theatres.”

The H. Vinoth directorial, Jana Nayagan has been headlined by Vijay, alongside Pooja Hegde as the female lead. Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deoil, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and Narain also feature in the film, making it a star-studded affair.

The film’s music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander, whose collaborations with Vijay have consistently delivered chart-topping soundtracks.
