Chinese media criticised the film after teaser launch

The film’s teaser was launched in December 2025, which portrayed Khan leading Indian troops in close combat against Chinese forces in Eastern Ladakh. The preview, however, drew mixed reactions from the netizens. The project also drew flak from Chinese media earlier this month, when the country’s newspaper Global Times accused the film of ‘distorting facts’ related to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and inducing anti-China sentiment. Notably, the conflict between the Chinese and Indian troops in the Galwan Valley remains one of the most significant military standoffs along the border in recent years.

The film was earlier slated for release on April 10, 2026, but the confirmation regarding the release date after the launch of the fresh poster has sparked speculation among fans regarding possible changes in the release schedule.

‘Maatrubhumi’ features Salman Khan essaying the role of an Indian Army Colonel, leading his soldiers against a larger opposing force. As claimed by the film-makers, the movie aims to highlight themes of sacrifice, courage and resilience, while also exploring the emotional dimensions of family and love amid the backdrop of war.

Netizens compared Salman’s sequence to TV series Game of Thrones

After the teaser was released, which showed Salman holding a barbed-wire weapon and confronting enemy soldiers, netizens opined that the scene resembled Jon Snow’s action from the battle episode in the popular television series ‘Game of Thrones.’ Khan later defended his restrained expression in the teaser, saying that his character of an Indian Army Colonel would not react with exaggerated emotion during combat.
