TMC MP Mahua Moitra was allegedly seen biting the hand of a police officer during a confrontation at an Opposition protest in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A video of the incident has circulated online, drawing sharp reactions over the conduct of both protesters and police.
Clash During Protest
The incident took place amid demonstrations by Opposition parties demanding action against Gyanesh Kumar over issues related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police had put up barricades as protesters attempted to move towards the Election Commission headquarters.
Visuals circulating on social media appear to show Moitra involved in a scuffle with a woman police personnel during the detention process. One widely shared clip shows what appears to be Moitra biting the officer's hand.
Moitra Shares Video
Moitra herself shared footage of the confrontation on social media and said the Opposition would return to protest repeatedly until Gyanesh Kumar steps down. Her post has added to the political debate surrounding the incident.
Debate Over Police Action
The incident comes amid wider controversy over how Delhi Police have handled the ongoing demonstrations. Protesters and Opposition leaders have alleged manhandling by police, while police have also raised allegations of misconduct and mistreatment of their personnel during the protests.
Delhi Police have recently deployed body-worn cameras for personnel handling protests, partly to maintain a record of interactions and help examine allegations of misconduct. The alleged biting incident has now added another flashpoint to the continuing confrontation between protesters and police in the capital.
