The Union Government on Monday said currently there are no plans to roll out petrol blended with 25% ethanol (E25), while acknowledging in Parliament that older vehicles compliant with E10 fuel could experience a decline of 3-5% in fuel efficiency, when running on E20.

The Centre’s response came in the Rajya Sabha after the leaders of the opposition raised questions over the nationwide rollout of E20 and alleged concerns among vehicle owners. The issue gained widespread political attention after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi voiced his demand for greater focus on the matter.

Centre rules out E25 rollout

PP Suneer from Kerala, a Rajya Sabha MP, asked whether the government was mulling an increase in the ethanol blend beyond 20% to E25. He also sought the Union Government’s response to reports of vehicle-related issues allegedly linked to the use of E20 fuel.

The Centre, responding to the MP’s queries, said that there had been no discussions so far on implementing E25. It added that any future move towards a 25% ethanol-blend would be considered only after further scientific studies and consultations with automobile manufacturers, oil companies and research institutions.

Additionally, the Union Government defended the rollout of E20 fuel as the outcome of an extensive testing process involving NITI Aayog, vehicle manufacturers and testing agencies, including the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). As per the government, laboratory and real-world tests examined several parameters, including engine wear, corrosion, vehicle startability and emissions.

“No widespread engine failures,” maintains Govt

The Centre, in its response to concerns being raised over the impact of E20 on vehicles, said the more than 20 crore two-wheelers and three crore petrol cars had used the blended fuel without any widespread reports of engine failure. It added that manufacturers continued to honour vehicle warranties for cars operating on E20, terming this an indication of industry confidence in the fuel’s safety. The government maintained that no abnormal corrosion or reduction in vehicle lifespan had come to pass so far.

Older E10 vehicles may take a mileage hit

According to the government, vehicles originally designed to run on E10 fuel could see a 3-5% reduction in fuel efficiency when operated on E20. It described the impact as relatively minor and emphasised that mileage also depends on driving habits, road and traffic conditions and vehicle maintenance.

E20 consists of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. After its was rolled out nationwide last year, it has become the standard petrol available at all fuel stations across India, meaning motorists cannot choose E10 or unblended petrol at regular pumps.
