Three villagers have been killed and three others injured in an ambush by unidentified armed men in Manipur, triggering protests and renewed fears of ethnic violence in the state.
Villagers Attacked While Collecting Firewood
Three Meitei villagers were killed on October 19 after armed men allegedly opened fire on a group collecting firewood in a forest area near the Imphal East and Kangpokpi district border.
According to reports, the villagers were gathering and transporting firewood when the attackers ambushed them. Three others were injured in the shooting and taken for medical treatment. The identities of the attackers have not been officially confirmed.

Protesters Take Victims’ Bodies to Chief Minister’s Residence
The killings sparked anger in Imphal, where protesters brought the bodies of two victims to the area outside Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s official residence.
The protest reflected growing frustration over the security situation and demands for action against those responsible. Police later removed the bodies and took them to a hospital mortuary.

Security Tightened After the Attack
Following the incident, the state government reviewed the security situation and ordered tighter security in vulnerable areas. Security forces have intensified operations as authorities work to identify the attackers and prevent further violence.
Ethnic Tensions Rise Again
The attack has renewed tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have experienced prolonged violence since May 2023.
Some Meitei groups have accused Kuki militants of involvement, but Kuki community representatives have denied the allegations. The responsibility for the latest attack remains unconfirmed.

Calls for Peace and Accountability
The killings have raised fresh concerns about the fragile security situation in Manipur. Residents are demanding justice for the victims and stronger measures to protect civilians in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have appealed for calm as investigations and security operations continue. The immediate challenge for the administration is to identify those responsible, prevent retaliatory violence and restore confidence in civilian safety across Manipur.
