BJP Mahila Morcha Stages Protest

The BJP Mahila Morcha staged a protest in Delhi against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on October 12, demanding accountability over the allegations against him. Protesters criticised the Congress leadership’s response and called for action in the matter.

Female Students Raise Serious Allegations

According to media reports, 11 female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) lodged complaints alleging sexual harassment and misconduct. The complaints reportedly included allegations of inappropriate remarks and physical contact, as well as claims that sexual favours were sought in exchange for marks.

JNU Dismisses Akoijam After Inquiry

JNU dismissed Akoijam from his position as a professor on October 9 following an inquiry by the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). The decision triggered further political reactions, with the BJP demanding accountability and criticising the Congress over the controversy.

Delhi Police Register FIR

Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Akoijam on October 11 following a complaint by JNU’s chief security officer. The police investigation is ongoing, and the allegations will be examined through the legal process.

Akoijam Denies Allegations

Akoijam has denied the allegations and questioned the procedure followed during the university inquiry. He has described the action against him as a witch hunt and raised concerns about the fairness of the proceedings.

The controversy has sparked a political dispute between the BJP and Congress, while raising questions about the handling of sexual harassment complaints at educational institutions.

The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the registration of an FIR does not establish criminal guilt.
