Tamil Nadu girl gang-raped: After a minor girl aged 15 was allegedly gang-raped in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district a few days ago, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has stepped into the case on Wednesday. The body has taken suo-motu cognisance of the horrendous act, and has sought a detailed action report from police within five days.

The NCW said that the sexual assault of the ‘15-year-old girl’ in Cheyyar has raised grave concerns over the security and safety of young girls. It also underscored the urgent need for executing stronger preventive and protective mechanisms against such heinous crimes.

NCW posted a message on its official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, which read, “The Commission has strongly condemned the barbaric act, stating that violence against minor girls is a gross violation of human rights and leaves deep physical, emotional and psychological scars on the survivor. Such incidents demand immediate accountability and the strictest legal action.”
Tamil Nadu DGP asked to initiate legal proceedings
NCW’s chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu to ensure that an FIR be registered against all accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, and that all of them be arrested immediately. Furthermore, he has been asked to initiate a fair and time-bound probe, besides ensuring comprehensive medical, counselling, rehabilitation and protection support for the survivor, as well as her kin.

Accused booked on Tuesday, 3 being questioned
An official attached to the Brahmadesam Police said the cops have registered a case under the POCSO Act on Tuesday and three persons are being questioned in connection with the case. He added that the cops are also sifting through the CCTV footage to trace and apprehend the perpetrators.
The survivor girl hails from Kancheepuram district, and was staying at her grandmother’s house in Cheyyar. Post-incident, she has been admitted to the Kancheepuram government hospital.
