Three cops attached to Delhi Police sustained injuries on Saturday after falling prey to an attack by a group of people during patrolling in the Janta Vihar area of Mukundpur, police said.  The police added that a 17-year-old juvenile has been detained in connection with the incident, while efforts are on to trace and apprehend the other accused.

Officials in the know of the case said the incident took place at around 3 pm on Saturday, when Head Constables Dinesh and Rajesh were conducting vehicle checks in the area. During this, they stumbled upon a bike being driven without valid documents. 

The duo seized the bike and took it to the police station for legal proceedings under Section 66 of the Delhi Police Act. At around 3:30 pm, when the duo returned to their beat, they were intercepted by a group that included the bike owner and his kin. 

According to police, the confrontation soon spiralled into violence soon. The group hurled chilli powder into the eyes of the two cops and began raining blows on them with bricks and sticks. 

Head Constable Tinu, who rushed to the spot upon receipt of the information regarding the assault and tried to assist his colleagues, also fell prey to the attack. 

Three policemen injured

All three police personnel sustained injuries in the alleged assault. Head Constable Dinesh sustained an injury to his head, while the other two policemen also sustained injuries. The trio was provided medical treatment and are said to be stable at present, as per police.

With the assistance of the locals, police managed to lay hands on a juvenile aged 17 at the scene. The other alleged attackers fled from there, and police have launched a manhunt to nab them.

Key accused has criminal antecedents

The city’s Bhalswa Dairy police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). One of the key accused has been identified as Sunil aka Pankaj, which, according to police, is a nefarious person of the area. Police said earlier he has been involved in five criminal cases, including two registered under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. 

The cops are now trying to ascertain the circumstances which led to the assault and the roles allegedly played by other members of the group.
