A suspected case of Ebola virus disease has surfaced from Rajasthan’s Jaipur, triggering heightened vigilance among health authorities. The development surfaced after a woman from Uganda was placed in strict isolation at a hospital in state capital Jaipur, while laboratory tests are being conducted to determine whether she is infected with the contagion.

The woman had landed in Jaipur from Sharjah on Friday morning aboard an Air Arabia flight and was identified during routine screening procedures at the airport after exhibiting symptoms associated with Ebola virus disease. She was immediately referred to the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS) Hospital, where she is under close medical observation.

Health officials await confirmation from lab

Hospital authorities, meanwhile, have urged the public not to draw any conclusion, underlining that the patient has not yet been diagnosed with Ebola virus. RUHS Hospital Superintendent Dr Anil Gupta said the woman is only a suspected case at this juncture. Hospital officials also weighed in, saying that samples have been collected and have been sent for specialised testing. The final diagnosis will depend on laboratory results.

Until the arrival of the reports, the patient will remain isolated under established infectious disease management protocols crafted to prevent any potential transmission. Notably, the development marks Rajasthan’s first suspected Ebola related alert amid growing international concern over the virus’s resurgence in parts of Africa.

Global outbreak draws eyeballs

The suspected case comes against the backdrop of a significant Ebola outbreak, involving the Bundibugyo strain, gripping several regions of Central and East Africa.

Global health agencies have attended the outbreak, with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring the situation in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in May. As no approved vaccine currently exists specifically for the Bundibugyo strain, raising concerns among health experts. Owing to the same, greater emphasis is being laid on rapid detection, surveillance and containment measures.

India ramps up surveillance measures

In the thick of the ongoing outbreak, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stepped up precautionary measures at airports and international entry points across the country. Travellers arriving from or transiting through Ebola-affected regions have been advised to immediately report symptoms like fever, vomiting, unexplained bleeding, severe weakness or recent exposure to infected people.

Authorities have also advised Indians to refrain from travelling to countries currently reeling under the outbreak, including Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan, unless very necessary.
