Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday backed student-led protests in Delhi over women’s safety, amid demonstrations following the alleged gangrape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park.

Don’t Restrict Women

In a social media post, Gandhi argued that women should not have to restrict their movement because of crimes committed against them. He called for safer public spaces and stronger action against those accused of sexual violence.

Students Continue Protests

Hundreds of Delhi University students have taken part in demonstrations over the past week, demanding better lighting, stronger policing, surveillance and safer routes around educational institutions. A major protest was held at the Faculty of Arts on Monday.

Protests Follow Aastha Kunj Case

The protests began after the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji. Police have arrested three accused in connection with the case, according to reports.

Focus on Public Safety

The demonstrations have brought wider concerns about street lighting, surveillance and police presence around Delhi’s colleges and public spaces into focus. The Supreme Court has also recently raised concerns about public spaces becoming high-risk areas because of inadequate lighting and surveillance.
