Bollywood actor Aamir Khan on Wednesday broke silence over the controversy surrounding his marriage to longtime partner Gauri Spratt, junking allegations of ‘Love Jihad’ and addressing the fatwa issued against him on Tuesday, following his wedding.

Notably, the couple had solemnised their marriage on July 5, 2026 in a private ceremony at Aamir’s house in Pali Hills area of Mumbai’s upscale Bandra locality. The marriage was registered under the Special Marriage Act, with approximately 150 close friends and kin attending the occasion.

Among those present were Aamir’s children from his earlier wives, namely, Junaid, Ira and Azad, along with Gauri Spratt’s son. The wedding, however, soon became a subject of political and religious debate, drawing reactions from various sections of the society.

Marriage triggers ‘Love Jihad’ debate

Shortly after the wedding, Maharashtra BJP Minister Nitesh Rane referred to the marriage as an example of ‘Love Jihad’ and urged the Hindu community to reflect on interfaith marriages involving public personalities.

Separately, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, issued a fatwa claiming that under Sharia Law, a Muslim man cannot marry a non-Muslim woman unless she converts to Islam. He termed the marriage ‘religiously impermissible.’

The remarks sparked a wider debate over interfaith marriages and personal choices.

Reacting to the criticism, Khan rejected the allegations and said his kin have always believed in respecting different faiths. Speaking to the media, he underlined that religious diversity has always been part of his family. He pointed out that both his sisters are married to Hindu men, while his daughter is also married to a Hindu.

Furthermore, he mentioned that his cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian. Shedding light on his own marital history, Aamir said that neither Reena Dutta, Kiran Rao, nor Gauri Spratt converted to Islam, as all his marriages were conducted as civil marriages.

He then revealed that Gauri is a Christian, though she is not a practising Christian. Reacting to the controversy, he remarked that ‘life is getting more comical as time passes.’

Aamir’s relationship with Spratt became public earlier this year

Aamir had earlier introduced Spratt as his partner during his 60th birthday celebrations this year. He revealed that he knew her for 25 years before reconnecting and eventually developing a relationship.

Their marriage marks a new phase in Aamir’s personal life, but the union has also become a focal point of debate over religions, marriage and individual choice.
