Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in Surat, Gujarat, has installed 388 anti-suicide fans in its boys’ and girls’ hostels to strengthen student safety. Vice-Chancellor Kishor Singh Chavda shared details of the initiative in an interview, explaining how the specially designed fans work and what prompted the university to adopt this precautionary measure.

How Do Anti-Suicide Fans Work?
According to Chavda, the anti-suicide fans feature a special spring mechanism. When pressure activates the mechanism, the spring pops out and the electricity supply is cut off.
The mechanism is designed to reduce the risk of fatal incidents involving ceiling fans in student accommodation. By automatically interrupting the power supply when the safety mechanism activates, these fans provide an additional layer of physical protection in hostel rooms.

Government and University Authorities Behind the Initiative
Chavda said the decision involved the Government of India, the Gujarat government, counselling centres and university authorities. He also referred to other universities where unfortunate incidents had occurred, explaining that these experiences helped inspire the adoption of preventive safety measures.
The installation covers both boys’ and girls’ hostels, making the initiative part of the university’s efforts to strengthen residential campus safety.

A Step Towards Safer Student Hostels
The installation of 388 anti-suicide fans highlights the importance of preventive infrastructure in educational institutions. While these specialised fans offer an additional physical safety measure, student welfare also requires accessible counselling services, mental health support and timely intervention.
The initiative brings attention to the role universities can play in reviewing hostel safety arrangements and adopting measures designed to protect students.
