Delhi boy rape murder: A Delhi court on Monday sentenced a man to imprisonment till death for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a boy aged 11 in 2019, ruling that he needed to be dealt with an ‘iron hand’ due to the grotesque and cruel mentality. Additional Sessions Judge Amit Sahrawat, who pronounced the verdict, refused to award a death penalty to the accused, noting that the offences were heinous in nature, but did not constitute the rarest of rare category.

Court rules mitigating factors not sufficient to alleviate parents’ sorrows

The court, in an order dated March 14, 2026, said, “The only mitigating factor in favour of the convict is his age (34 years), and still he has a complete life to live. Additionally, this is the only criminal case against him.” However, the court observed that the mitigating factors were not sufficient to alleviate the sorrows of the parents who had lost their only child.

The court further said, “The convict’s age cannot justify his misdeeds. His conduct in committing the heinous crime showcases his criminal mentality, and thus, he does not deserve the benefit of any factor in his favour. He is required to be dealt with an iron hand.” The court then sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Victim’s parents get Rs 15L in compensation

Regarding the aspect of compensation to the parents, the court ruled, “The loss of an only child aged close to 11 and a half years, and that too in the circumstances where he was sexually violated and murdered, is not bearable for any parent.” The ruling bench observed that the couple was now not in a medical condition to conceive a child, and that they have to pass their life without a child; a trauma which is unbearable for any person. The court then awarded them Rs 15 lakh as compensation.
