Cyclone Arnab is intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, putting coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha on high alert. With the powerful storm expected to make landfall on October 28, authorities are stepping up precautionary measures, including school closures, train cancellations and preparations for evacuations.

Landfall Expected on October 28
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Arnab has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm. It is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28.
The storm is forecast to bring sustained wind speeds of 115 to 125 kmph, with gusts reaching 140 kmph. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in vulnerable areas, raising concerns about flooding, damage to infrastructure and disruptions to daily life.

Schools and Colleges to Remain Closed
Authorities have announced precautionary closures of educational institutions in vulnerable districts. In southern Odisha, schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri are scheduled to remain closed on October 28 and 29.
In Andhra Pradesh, authorities have also ordered educational institutions in affected districts to remain closed as the cyclone approaches. Residents have been advised to follow official weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.

Train Services Disrupted
Indian Railways has cancelled eight train services and altered the operations of two others as a precautionary measure. Several passenger and express trains connecting Visakhapatnam, Koraput and Kirandul are among those affected.
Passengers should check the latest railway advisories before travelling, as additional changes may be announced depending on weather conditions.
Rescue Teams on Standby
The governments of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have intensified disaster preparedness, with rescue teams and cyclone shelters being readied. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, while residents in low-lying coastal areas are being urged to remain alert.
Authorities are prioritising evacuation and emergency response to minimise casualties as Cyclone Arnab approaches the eastern coastline.
