Tamil actor-cum-politician Vijay’s wife files for divorce, accuses him of infidelity

Vijay divorce news: A startling news has sent shockwaves across Kollywood (Tamil Film Industry) and the political fraternity, as Tamil actor-turned-politican Vijay’s wife has filed for divorce on Friday, as per reports. Vijay’s wife, Sangeeta Sornalingam, has taken the step after more than 25 years of marriage, accusing him of infidelity. It is noteworthy that Vijay carries the screen name ‘Thalapathy’ (Commander) in Kollywood, and boasts of a huge fan base in India and other countries.

Petition filed at family court in Chengalpattu

According to several reports, Sangeeta has filed a divorce petition at a family court in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu, under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954. However, neither Vijay, nor Sangeeta has issued an official statement in this regard.

Reports claim that Sangeeta mentioned in the petition that Vijay was in an extramarital relationship with an actress. She further alleged that she dicovered the illicit relationship in 2021, and despite Vijay’s purported assurances of halting the relationship, it continued.

Section 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, have been invoked in the petition, which permit divorce on grounds of adultery and cruelty. The case is now awaiting judicial determination in the district court.

Notably, Sangeeta and Vijay had solemnised their marriage in 1999, according to both Hindu and Christian traditions. The couple has two children named Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. Sangeeta mostly maintained a private profile, but occasionally used to accompany Vijay to public events.

Thalapathy’s last film battling legal woes

The divorce petition comes at a time when the final film of Thalapathy Vijay’s acting career, ‘Jana Nayagan’, has been battling certification hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film was slated to release on January 9, 2026, but uncertainty looms over its theatrical release due to certification issues. Vijay had ventured into politics with the launch of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and had decided to halt his flourishing acting journey with Jana Nayagan.
