Vijay divorce news: Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay on Saturday broke silence on his personal life for the first time, after reports of his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam emerged in the final week of February 2026. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief addressed an event centred on International Women’s Day in Tamil Nadu’s Mamallapuram, where he briefly touched upon the issue and urged his fans, as well as supporters not to feel distressed by the developments.

“I am getting hurt”: Vijay

Addressing the attendees of the event, Vijay said, “Recently, there have been a few problems happening. I see that you are getting hurt while fighting for it. I’m getting hurt seeing you guys getting hurt. I’ll take care of the problems. Don’t get hurt. Nothing to worry about..”

Additionally, Kollywood’s (Tamil film industry) ‘Thalapathy’ lifted the curtain on several welfare promises aimed at women, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. He promised a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500, a sovereign of gold and a silk saree as a wedding gift for the females of the state, and six free LPG cylinders for every household if his party is voted to power. 

Sangeetha filed divorce petition in early 2026

News agency ANI revealed the court’s documents, which suggest that Sangeetha had initiated legal proceedings in early 2026 before the district court in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu. She sought dissolution of her marriage with Vijay, accusing him of infidelity, cruelty and having an ‘adulterous relationship’ with a fellow actress. 

Reportedly, Sangeetha is a British citizen, who has sought interim residential rights until the case is resolved. She demanded that she be allowed to continue living at the couple’s home located on Casuarina Drive in Chennai. According to the petition, Sangeetha does not have another residence in India as of now. 

Vijay divorce news: Actor’s appearance with Trisha Krishnan sparks buzz

After the news of divorce proceedings broke the internet, Vijay was spotted with actress Trisha Krishnan at a wedding reception earlier this week. The duo attended Kalapathi Suresh’s son’s wedding reception together, posed for photographs and left the venue at the same time. The duo has shared the screen in Tamil films like Ghilli and Leo. Notably, their appearance after Sangeetha filing for divorce has fuelled whispers regarding his relationship with Trisha. 

Jana Nayagan’s release date yet to be announced

The final film of Vijay’s acting career, Jana Nayagan is awaiting theatrical release, and no date has been announced so far in this regard. After starring in Jana Nayagan, Vijay is aiming for a full-fledged political career with TVK, eyeing a win in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.
