An Indian pilot has been credited with helping prevent a major disaster after his co-pilot allegedly stabbed him inside the cockpit of a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after the incident on Wednesday. All 174 passengers and crew were reported safe.
Captain Smit Machchhar Attacked in Cockpit
The Indian captain has been identified as Smit Machchhar. According to reports, the co-pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed him during the flight.
Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar reportedly fought back and managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and help overpower the attacker.
Plane Suddenly Lost Altitude
The incident triggered a major emergency in the air. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft making a sharp descent from around 34,000 feet, losing more than 14,000 feet in a short period.
Emergency signals were transmitted, and Israeli authorities reportedly feared a possible hijacking before the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk.
Passengers and Crew Helped
After the cockpit door was opened, passengers and crew members helped subdue the co-pilot. Two other Flydubai pilots who were travelling on the flight also helped take control of the aircraft.
The plane then landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. The co-pilot was arrested by Saudi authorities and is being questioned.
Indian Pilot Hospitalised
Captain Machchhar was taken to a hospital after landing. Reports say he underwent surgery and is in stable condition. The Indian government has also been in contact with his family and offered support.
Investigation Underway
Flydubai has confirmed that an in-flight incident occurred and said the aircraft was safely secured and diverted by its crew. The airline has also said that the reason and motive behind the incident remain under investigation.
The incident has drawn international attention, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praising Captain Machchhar for his actions and describing him as a hero.
