Punjabi actor-cum-singer Diljit Dosanjh has landed in the centre of an online debate after he recently distanced himself from the ongoing protest staged by the satirical movement Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The singer’s remarks made during an Instagram Live session have prompted a response from the CJP, which said the movement is centred on education reforms and the future of students rather than partisan politics.

The protest, now being led by activist Sonam Wangchuk and CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, has drawn numerous eyeballs in recent days. During the live interaction, Diljit was asked about the demonstration but clarified that he did not wish to comment on the issue.

His response quickly went viral on social media, and attracted mixed reactions from supporters and critics alike.

“Keep me away from protests”: Diljit

While answering a question about the protest, Diljit said he preferred to stay away from politics, underscoring that he is an artist and not a politician. He said during the Instagram Live Session, “Bro, keep me away from protests and such things. I am an artist. I am not a politician.” He added that not everything in the world can be perfect and recited a verse from the Guru Granth Sahib, which read, “Nanak dukhiya sab sansar, so sukhia jis naam adhaar."

He further said that his name is often linked to issues he has no involvement in, and stressed that he harbours no ill will towards anyone. He wished both sides well, saying, “Those who are protesting, congratulations to them, and for whom the protest is happening, congratulations to them also, as I don’t know anything.”

His comments were widely shared across social media platforms, with users expressing diverse views on whether public figures should speak on issues of public interest.

CJP says this

Reacting to the viral clip, the CJP said the demonstration at Jantar Matar was not being projected as a movement in support of any political party. According to them, while Diljit identified himself rather than a politician, the protestors are demanding reforms in the education system and a better future for students, making the issue one of public concern rather than political affiliation.

It added that the movement represents the aspirations of students, youth and their families, who are seeking greater accountability and meaningful amendments to the education system.

The organisation also pointed out that a large section of Diljit’s fan base comprises Gen Z audiences and students who support his music and films.

CJP's post on 'X'

CJP also clarified that while choosing not to endorse the movement was Diljit’s personal decision, many people hoped that issues reflecting millions of students and their future would not be dismissed in a manner that could hurt those already concerned about the state of education.

The organisation also tagged Dosanjh in a post on ‘X’. So far, the singer has not publicly responded to CJP’s statement.
