A delegation of BJP women Members of Parliament left Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday after meeting President Droupadi Murmu to seek action against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over sexual harassment allegations linked to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The delegation requested the President’s intervention, including action against the MP and measures to ensure the safety of the women who filed complaints against him.
BJP Delegation Seeks Presidential Intervention
The delegation was led by BJP MP D. Purandeswari and included BJP Mahila Morcha president Roop Kumari Choudhary, Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj and other women parliamentarians. After the meeting, Roop Kumari Choudhary told reporters that the delegation had urged President Murmu to look into the matter and ensure appropriate action. The MPs also sought protection for the complainants, highlighting concerns about their safety.
JNU Dismisses Akoijam After Internal Inquiry
The controversy follows JNU’s decision to terminate Akoijam’s services as a professor after an internal inquiry into sexual harassment allegations. According to reports, 11 female students filed complaints against him in May 2026. The allegations include claims of inappropriate conduct during academic interactions and examinations. Delhi Police has also registered an FIR in connection with the case.
Akoijam has denied the allegations and questioned the university’s inquiry process, describing the proceedings as a witch-hunt. The allegations and his response remain important parts of the ongoing case.
