Eight people, including three children and two women, were killed after the car they were travelling in was swept away by a rain-fed drain near the Maa Baglamukhi temple in Nalkheda, Agar Malwa district, following heavy rainfall in the area.
The tragic incident came to light after the vehicle was carried away by the strong flow of water. The car was recovered on Saturday morning after the water level receded, bringing an end to the search for those travelling in the vehicle.
Seven Victims From Odisha
According to the information available, seven of the eight victims were from Odisha, while the driver was a resident of Madhya Pradesh. The group was travelling in the car when the vehicle was caught in the overflowing drain near the temple.
The incident has highlighted the dangers posed by rain-fed water channels and rapidly rising water levels during periods of heavy rainfall. Such drains can become difficult to cross when water flow increases suddenly, particularly in low-lying areas.
Car Swept Away by Strong Water Flow
The vehicle was swept away by the force of the water, leaving little opportunity for those inside to escape. The car could be located only after the water receded on Saturday morning.
The deaths have brought renewed attention to safety concerns around roads and crossings located near natural drainage channels during the monsoon. Sudden increases in water levels can make seemingly accessible routes hazardous within a short period.

Search Ends After Water Recedes
Rescue and search efforts continued until the water level dropped sufficiently for the vehicle to be located. The recovery of the car confirmed the tragic outcome of the incident, with all eight occupants reported dead.
The victims included three children and two women, adding to the severity of the tragedy. Seven of those killed were from Odisha, while the driver belonged to Madhya Pradesh.
The incident near the Maa Baglamukhi temple in Nalkheda is a stark reminder of the risks associated with travelling near swollen drains during heavy rain. Authorities and local residents routinely face challenges in dealing with sudden water accumulation and strong currents during the monsoon season.
The incident has left families of the victims grieving and has raised concerns over safety measures around rain-fed drains and waterlogged areas.
