A tragic accident in Mumbai claimed the life of an 11-year-old student and left five others injured after a massive tree collapsed onto a school bus in the city's Tilak Nagar area on Thursday afternoon. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of ageing trees during the monsoon season and the need for regular inspections in urban areas.

The accident occurred at around 2:50 pm when a large tree suddenly fell on a bus belonging to Universal School. The impact crushed a section of the vehicle, trapping several students inside and triggering a major rescue operation.

One Student Dies, Five Under Treatment

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6) Sameer Shaikh, the deceased student has been identified as Vihan Shrivastav, who was declared dead after being taken to the hospital. The school bus was carrying 18 students at the time of the incident. Twelve children were safely evacuated from the bus, while five injured students were admitted to Zen Hospital for treatment.

Officials said four of the injured children sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition. However, one student remains in critical condition and is receiving intensive medical care.

Swift Rescue Operation Saves Children

Rescue teams, local residents and the bus conductor acted quickly to pull trapped students out of the damaged vehicle. Emergency services rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident. A crane was deployed to remove the fallen tree from the bus, allowing rescue personnel to safely reach the trapped children. The coordinated efforts of emergency responders and locals helped prevent further casualties.

Visuals from the scene showed the enormous tree crushing the roof and side of the school bus, while officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) worked alongside rescue teams to clear the debris.

Authorities Probe Cause of Tree Collapse

Officials have launched an investigation to determine what caused the tree to collapse. Preliminary inquiries are examining whether heavy rainfall, weak roots or poor maintenance may have contributed to the accident. The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by ageing and weakened trees during the monsoon season in Mumbai. Civic authorities are expected to review the condition of vulnerable trees across the city to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The heartbreaking death of a young student has left the school community and local residents in shock, with many calling for stricter tree safety audits and faster preventive action to protect lives.
