In a special security initiative during Navratri, women police officers in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad have been entering Garba venues wearing traditional chaniya-choli outfits to monitor the celebrations and ensure women’s safety. The officers from the police department’s SHE Team are keeping a discreet watch on the crowds to identify suspicious behaviour and respond to incidents of harassment.
Women Cops Blend into the Garba Crowd
According to reports, a woman Crime Police Inspector and her team visited a Garba event at AC Dome in the Sarkhej area of Ahmedabad. Dressed in traditional attire, the officers spent around an hour inspecting the venue and observing the arrangements. The team also visited the monitoring room to examine CCTV cameras and review the security arrangements. The initiative allows officers to observe the situation without immediately drawing attention to their presence as police personnel.
SHE Team Keeps Watch on Misconduct
The SHE Team is responsible for helping ensure the safety of women in public spaces. During Garba celebrations, officers are keeping an eye on individuals who may engage in harassment or other inappropriate behaviour. With large crowds gathering at Garba venues during Navratri, discreet surveillance can help police identify potential problems and respond promptly. The initiative is also intended to make women feel safer while participating in the festivities.
Security Measures Strengthened During Navratri
Ahmedabad Police have introduced multiple measures to maintain security during the festival, including surveillance, patrolling and coordination with event organisers. Police teams are also monitoring public spaces where large numbers of people gather.
The use of traditional clothing by women officers is an additional approach to keeping a watch on the celebrations while allowing them to move through the crowd discreetly.
Focus on Safe and Fear-Free Celebrations
Navratri is one of Gujarat’s most celebrated festivals, attracting thousands of people to Garba events every evening. Police officials are working to ensure that participants can enjoy the festivities without fear of harassment. The undercover initiative highlights the role of women police personnel in making public celebrations safer and maintaining security during one of the state’s busiest festive periods.
