A former employee has been arrested in connection with a massive fire at Shyam Sangini Textile Market in Surat, after police alleged that he set the blaze over a dispute involving ₹10,000 in unpaid salary. The fire, reported on September 9, destroyed goods belonging to several traders, with losses estimated at around ₹24 crore.
Former Accountant Accused of Setting Fire
The accused has been identified as 33-year-old Vinod Savle, a former accountant who worked at a textile business in the market. According to police, Savle earned around ₹30,000 a month but claimed that ₹10,000 remained unpaid after he left the job. He also alleged that he had been repeatedly criticised and humiliated at work.
Police said the dispute led Savle to allegedly decide to “teach his employer a lesson.” CCTV footage and other investigative inputs reportedly helped the Crime Branch identify him.
₹150 Petrol Allegedly Used
According to investigators, Savle bought around ₹150 worth of petrol before the incident. Police allege that he carried it to the market and waited until the premises were largely empty.
He allegedly set fire to clothing parcels kept outside a shop before leaving the area. The flames then spread to nearby shops and goods, causing extensive damage.
Multiple Traders Suffered Losses
The fire affected goods stored across several shops on the sixth floor of the market. Police said 17 shops belonging to four traders were affected, while reports put the combined loss at approximately ₹24 crore. One trader alone reported losses of about ₹6 crore.
Investigators said the accused allegedly did not expect the fire to spread and cause losses to other traders.
Police Investigation Continues
Savle was arrested by the Surat Crime Branch, and the case has been handed over for further investigation. Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence as they reconstruct how the fire started and spread. The allegations against the accused will be tested through the ongoing legal process.
