Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals after a court convicted them of what authorities described as an “immoral act” inside a mosque in Mecca. Bangladesh’s consulate says it was not informed before the executions.
Two Bangladeshi Nationals Executed
Saudi Arabia executed two Bangladeshi nationals, Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, in the Mecca region on October 14, 2026, according to the Saudi Ministry of Interior.
The ministry said the two were arrested following an investigation and later charged. Their case was sent to a court, which found them guilty and sentenced them to death.
Authorities Did Not Reveal Full Details
According to the Saudi authorities, the case involved an “immoral act” inside a mosque. The court reportedly cited the seriousness of the offence and the sanctity of the place where it occurred.
However, officials have not publicly explained exactly what the alleged act involved or identified the mosque where it took place. The sentences were imposed under ta’zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law.
Bangladesh Consulate Seeks Answers
The Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah said it had not received prior notification of the executions.
After learning about the case through media reports, the consulate contacted Saudi authorities and requested formal acknowledgement and further information through diplomatic channels.
Court Ruling and Royal Order
The Saudi Interior Ministry said the court’s verdicts were upheld by the relevant authorities before a royal order was issued to carry out the sentences. The executions were then conducted in the Mecca region on October 14.
Saudi authorities reaffirmed their position that violations of the sanctity of mosques and similar offences would be dealt with under the kingdom’s laws.
Case Raises Questions Over Transparency
The executions have drawn attention because the exact nature of the offence has not been disclosed publicly and Bangladesh’s consulate says it was not informed beforehand. Bangladeshi officials are seeking more information from Saudi Arabia about the case and the circumstances surrounding the executions.
