Rajasthan student alleges JBL earbud burst inside her ear, leading to eardrum’s inflammation; shares pics online

Earbud bursts inside ear: A student belonging to Rajasthan has alleged that a wireless earbud manufactured by JBL malfunctioned and burst inside her ear, while she was listening to music. The student further alleged the incident left her tympanic membrane (eardrum) inflamed. The claim, which has surfaced on social media, has drawn eyeballs and has raised widespread concerns over the safety of battery-operated audio devices. 

As per the social media post, the student said that the incident occurred while she was using the right-side JBL Tune Beam 2 earbud at a normal volume for approximately 15 minutes. She said she experienced a sudden ‘drilling machine-like sensation’ in  her ear following the alleged malfunction of the earbud.

Student approaches doctor, he confirms inflammation

The student continued to say that she subsequently sought medical attention from an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist, who diagnosed inflammation of the tympanic membrane. In her post, she shared the pictures of the damaged device along with a doctor’s prescription online, asserting that the device was barely a month old and had been gifted to her by her sister. 

She also tagged consumer authorities in the post and urged them to probe the matter, as well as take appropriate action.

Earbud bursts inside ear: JBL responds, promises action

The post, which went viral quickly, was taken cognisance of by JBL India. It confirmed that it has taken note of the complaint and has initiated an inquiry. The company said in its response, “Hello, thank you for letting us know about the situation. We saw your posts and have shared the information with our team in India for a direct follow-up with you.” 

Netizens react, raise safety concerns

The incident triggered an intense debate online, as netizens expressed apprehension over the safety of wireless earbuds and similar electronic devices. Some users shared their experiences, while others advised the student to pursue legal recourse through consumer courts. Concerns were also put forth about potential battery or pressure-related risks linked to in-ear devices. 

Experts have often advised users to avoid prolonged usage of such devices, maintain moderate volume levels and ensure that the devices are purchased from authorised sellers to keep the risks at bay.
