Worm-infested curd in Vande Bharat: A new development has emerged in the case, where worm-infested curd had been served to passengers travelling on a Vande Bharat express a few days ago. After a video of the incident went viral, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has issued a notice to Amul, the brand to which the curd belonged, and has sought a detailed explanation over the incident. Notably, the incident occurred on the Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat route.

Complaint by passengers sparks action
The incident was reported after passengers on board the train raised concerns over the quality of the food served on the train, and shared images as well as videos of the worm-infested curd on social media. One such video, which began making rounds on the internet rapidly, showed worms in the curd, raising serious questions about hygiene standards on one of India’s “flagship train services.” After the video gained traction online, authorities took cognisance of the complaint, and levied a fine of Rs 10 lakh on IRCTC. Meanwhile, the private catering contractor was slapped with a fine of Rs 50 lakh.

The Ministry of Railways described the incident as ‘serious’ and unacceptable, particularly given the premium positioning of Vande Bharat trains. The ministry officials directed the IRCTC to identify the source of the lapse and ensure accountability across the supply chain. The ministry emphasised that passenger complaints regarding food quality are closely being monitored, assuring strict action in cases of negligence. After receiving directives, IRCTC has sought clarification from Amul, which supplies packaged dairy products for onboard catering.

An IRCTC official told the media that Amul has been asked to submit a comprehensive report, adding that further action would depend on the basis of the inquiry’s findings. Amul, in response, has maintained that such contamination is ‘scientifically and operationally impossible’ within its production process. It further claimed that an internal audit of its value chain had been conducted, which revealed no deviations or quality breaches. IRCTC is expected to assess Amul’s response before determining their further course of action, even as concerns over passenger safety and service quality remain in the spotlight.
