Vijay divorce news: Hours after the news of Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay’s wife heading for a divorce broke the internet, a past remark made by Kollywood’s ‘Thalapathy’ on his wife during an interview has gone viral. Notably, Sangeetha Sornalingam, the actor-cum-politican’s wife, had filed a divorce petition in December 2025, but it came to public light on February 27, 2026.

Sangeetha has accused Vijay of cruelty, and of maintaining an extra-marital affair with another actress.

“She watches me strictly”, said Vijay in an interview in 2022

Four years ago, Vijay appeared in an interview on the Tamil channel Sun TV with director Nelson Dilipkumar. During the interview, he said, “She (Sangeetha) watches me strictly.” On the other hand, Vijay’s father and filmmaker, SA Chandrasekhar also said earlier in a separate interview with NewsGlitz that although Vijay used to pay less heed to opinions extended by others, he always valued Sangeetha’s feedback.

The divorce petition filed by Sangeetha in the Chengalpattu family court mentioned that in April 2021, she discovered Vijay’s illicit relationship with an actress. Sangeetha claimed that she was in ‘deep emotional pain and mental suffering’ after making the discovery.

The plea further alleged that back then, Vijay had assured her of ending the relationship, but failed to do so. The petition also noted that the couple took multiple attempts at reconciliation through legal counselling and personal discussions between September 2021-February 2022, and again between August 2024-February 2025, but failed to land an amicable decision.

Sangeetha was Vijay’s fan before being hitched to him

Sangeetha is the daughter of a Sri Lankan Tamil industrialist, and had met Vijay after being moved by his performance in movies. The couple first tied the knot in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, and later solemnised it in Chennai too, on August 25, 1999.
