Days after the satirical outfit Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) announced a legal defence fund of as much as Rs 1 crore for the protestors arrested or detained by Delhi Police in connection with the July 20 unrest at Jantar Mantar, an RTI-activist from Surat has sought official inquiries into both the outfit’s financial dealings and the funding of its founder, Abhijeet Dipke’s education in the United States (US).

As per a report by news agency PTI, RTI activist Amit Tiwari has written to multiple authorities, seeking a probe into the financial background of Dipke’s father, Bhagwanrao Dipke, a retired employee of Maharashtra government. The activist has questioned how the family was able to finance Abhijeet’s higher education in the US while Bhagwanrao was serving as a Junior Engineer (JE) with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

The complaints have emerged amid heightened political attention which CJP drew after it protested against the NEET UG 2026 paper leak.

Questions raised over US education funding

Dipke, an alumnus of Boston University, returned to India on June 6, 2026 to spearhead protests organised by the CJP in light of numerous education system irregularities occurring across the country. Referring to Bhagwanrao’s government service, Amit Tiwari questioned whether the family’s financial resources matched the expenditure incurred on overseas education.

Tiwari said, “I have also complained to the Maharashtra Government that Bhagwanrao Dipke was a Junior Engineer at MIDC. So, if he received a salary of ₹60,000-65,000, how was he able to afford the education of his children in the US?".

Furthermore, he pleaded with the Maharashtra Government to investigate whether the case involved disproportionate assets.

As of now, neither Bhagwanrao Dipke nor Abhijeet Dipke has responded to the allegations.

Legal defence fund under scanner too

Apart from raising questions over the family’s finances, Tiwari has also approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Central GST authorities regarding the Rs 1 crore legal defence announced by senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil SIbal for people associated with the CJP protests.

PTI quoted Tiwari, who argued that the CJP is not a registered political party and sought verification of its legal status under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

He asserted, “The Cockroach Janta Party is an unregistered entity but is operating as a political party. If ₹1 crore has been pledged to it as a legal defence fund, then the EC should verify whether the CJP is registered with it under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951."

Moreover, he also maintained that if the organisation is not registered, the collection and utilisation of funds should be examined by the competent authorities.

Additionally, Tiwari also questioned the taxation aspect of the legal aid announcement, asking whether the applicable 18% GST would be paid on the Rs 1 crore amount pledged by Kapil Sibal.

Tiwari slams CJP protests

The activist, towards the conclusion of his statements, also criticised the direction taken by the CJP-led protests, claiming the movement had deviated from its actual objective of highlighting alleged irregularities in the NEET UG 2026 exam.

He opined, “We respect our elders. It was fine until you were carrying out the CJP movement and protesting over NEET. But in the middle of the agitation, you started abusing PM Modi and his late mother. You also spoke foul on his ties to foreign leaders. We have complained against all of this. It is all wrong.”
