“After I serve my jail term, I will kill my dead wife’s sugar daddy.” These horrendous remarks came from Ramanuj Goswami on Tuesday, the very man who hacked his wife to death in Assam’s Guwahati on Saturday, severed her head and fingers, and stored them in a refrigerator.

He made the aforementioned remarks while the cops were escorting him to a court in Guwahati, a day after he was remanded to seven days in police custody for his wife’s murder.

Accused Ramanuj Goswami

Speaking to reporters in Assamese, Goswami confessed to killing his wife and claimed he would also kill the person he repeatedly addressed as the ‘sugar daddy,’ after completing his jail term. When the reporters pressed him to reveal the person’s identity, Goswami lashed out at them and behaved rudely with them.

He later told the media, “I have no regrets, no apologies.”

Wife’s body found inside rented accommodation

Goswami was produced before a court on Tuesday, almost a day after the police secured his seven-day police custody. He had surrendered late on Sunday night after fleeing from the rented accommodation for nearly two days.

Police said they are interrogating him to establish the motive behind the spine-chilling murder and piece together the sequence of events leading up to and following the crime.

Police suspect the accused attacked his wife, Riya Talukdar, with a sharp-edged weapon during an altercation. The circumstances surrounding his reference to the ‘sugar daddy,’ including the identity of the person he was referring to, are also likely to form part of the probe.

The gruesome incident came to light on Saturday (September 6) after the couple’s neighbours experienced a foul smell emanating from their house and raised an alarm with the police.

The residents of the area told the police after their arrival that they had not seen the married couple for two days and that the cell phones of both of them were switched off.

Acting upon the disclosure, police broke open the apartment’s door and stumbled upon a harrowing sight; Talukdar’s headless body and her fingers severed.

Severed head recovered from refrigerator

After the confirmation of her identity, police searched the apartment and found her body inside a refrigerator, concealed in a polythene bag. Goswami was not home when the police arrived. The police launched a manhunt for him, while his neighbours said they had last seen him on Friday.

Talukdar’s body and its severed remains were sent to the morgue for autopsy, while police continued probing the circumstances behind the killing. A day later, Goswami surrendered before the police on Sunday. He was then produced before a court, which remanded him to seven days of police custody.
