Gurugram Police on Wednesday claimed to have detained Kalyan Bainsla, the car driver accused of deliberately hitting a female sports-bike rider at Gurugram’s Golf Course Road. According to police, Bainsla was detained from Rajasthan’s Dausa, and the development emerged after a CCTV grab of the incident prompted widespread outrage. All of this prompted the cops to invoke an attempt-to-murder case against Bainsla.

Notably, the offence carries a provision of up to 10 years of imprisonment.

Shocking crash captured on CCTV

The said incident took place on Sunday when a white sedan car swerved sharply to the right on the Golf Course Road and crashed into the bike of the victim woman, identified as Sia. Sia had been riding her Aprilia RS 457 sports bike and was wearing a helmet at the moment.

A disturbing CCTV video showed the impact sending Sia crashing onto the road, while her sports bike skidded across the surface, producing a shower of sparks.

The footage emerged as a focal point of the police probe, and the authorities added the attempt to murder charge based on the findings.

Sia, while addressing the media before Bainsla’s detention, said she was determined to pursue the case and ensure that such an incident does not happen in the future with another female biker. She asserted, “He thinks he will just hit a woman and speed away and nothing would happen to him,” she said, adding that the incident remains a clear hit-and-run, as well as an attempt-to-murder case.

Sia’s father, Rohshan Chauhan, also weighed in after the incident, saying the family would not rest until the accused is dealt a severe punishment.

Accused claims only one side was presented online

Bainsla, who appeared on camera from an undisclosed location for a media interview prior to his detention, claimed that he did not know whether the biker was a man or a woman. He further alleged that only one side of the incident had been presented publicly and questioned why videos involving one of Sia’s male friends had not emerged.

During the interview, he said, “I felt very sorry for that girl.”

However, Sia hit back, arguing that his actions immediately after the collision did not demonstrate concern for her safety. She remarked, “If you really felt sorry for me, then why didn’t you stop? It was your responsibility. If you hit me, you should have stopped and checked whether I was injured.”

“Could have died on the spot”: Sia

Sia went on to say that the consequences of the collision could have been considerably more grave, warning that she could have suffered multiple fractures or even lost her life. She added, “I could have suffered much more serious injuries. My bones could have been broken. I could have died on the spot.”

Thereafter, she slammed the accused’s expression of sympathy, pointing to the CCTV footage showing the occupants fleeing the scene without stopping.

She said, “This display of sympathy does not suit him. The videos clearly show how they fled. They did not stop even for a second to check whether the person they had hit was alive or dead.”
