Customers planning to visit bank branches in August should check the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar in advance, as public and private sector banks across India will remain closed for up to 14 days during the month due to weekends, national holidays and region-specific festivals.

The holiday schedule applies to major lenders, including the State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and other scheduled banks. While physical branches will remain shut on notified dates, customers can continue to access digital banking services such as internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, ATMs and cash deposit machines.
Bank holidays vary across states
The RBI's holiday calendar includes national holidays, regional festivals and mandatory weekly offs. Besides gazetted holidays, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks remain closed on every Sunday and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
Since several holidays are state-specific, customers are advised to verify the holiday schedule with their local branch before planning visits for cash transactions, cheque clearances or other in-person banking services.

Digital banking services to continue
Despite branch closures, essential banking facilities will remain available throughout the month. Customers can continue using internet banking, mobile banking applications, ATMs, UPI platforms and other digital payment services unless banks announce temporary maintenance outages.
Experts advise customers to complete time-sensitive banking activities, including cheque deposits, cash withdrawals and document-related work, before long holiday weekends to avoid inconvenience.
Schools to observe national, regional holidays in Aug 2026
Schools across India will also witness several holidays during August this year, with the exact schedule depending on individual state governments and educational boards.

The key nationwide holiday will be Independence Day on August 15, while Milad-un-Nabi (Id-E-Milad) is expected to be observed on August 26 in many states, subject to local notifications.
Several states are also likely to declare holidays for regional festivals such as Raksha Bandhan, Onam, Bonalu, Pang-Lhabsol, Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi and Ayyankali Jayanthi. In Tamil Nadu, certain districts are expected to observe additional local holidays, including a holiday in Namakkal for Valvil Ori Vizha.
Parents and students are advised to check notifications issued by their respective schools or state education departments, as holiday schedules may differ from one region to another.
