Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav on Friday felicitated veterans who fought to safeguard democracy during the Emergency era, describing their struggle as no less significant than India's freedom movement. Addressing the State Conference of Democracy Warriors at Ravindra Bhavan in Bhopal, the Chief Minister also unveiled a series of welfare initiatives aimed at recognising their sacrifices.
The event kicked off with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a floral tribute to the democracy warriors. Among those felicitated were 96-year-old democracy warrior Laxmi Narayan Patidar, 95-year-old Shanti Lal Sanghvi, and former minister Umashankar Gupta. A short film depicting the Emergency period was also screened during the programme.

CM slams Congress over emergency legacy
Addressing the gathering, CM Dr Yadav launched a sharp verbal attack on the Congress, alleging that the party had repeatedly undermined democratic values. He remarked that while several countries gained independence around the same time as India and made remarkable progress, the Congress failed to uphold democratic principles despite decades in power.
Recalling the Emergency imposed between 1975 and 1977, he said the families lived in fear as people were arrested without explanation and were sent directly to jail, leaving their loved ones uncertain about their future. He claimed detainees were pressured to join the Congress and publicly praise then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in exchange for their release.

Describing the struggle of democracy warriors as comparable to India's fight for independence, CM Dr Yadav said their sacrifices ensured the survival of democracy, making it possible for individuals from humble backgrounds to rise to the nation's highest offices. He added that India today stands proudly as the world's largest democracy.
Congress accused of misusing the Constitution
Continuing his criticism, CM Dr Yadav alleged that the Congress had misused the Constitution more than any other political party. He claimed the party promoted only one family while suppressing the growth of other leaders.
Highlighting the achievements of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi-led government over the past decade, he said India had made remarkable strides in development. He also noted that this year marks the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), expressing pride in being associated with the organisation and praising its contributions during times of national need.
Major announcements made for democracy warriors
During the conference, the state’s top political leader announced a series of new initiatives for democracy warriors. These include a dedicated pilgrimage train, two days of free accommodation at government rest houses and circuit houses across Madhya Pradesh, free medical treatment, and air ambulance services.
