Maa Kushmanda Puja Vidhi: On the fourth day of Navratri, the fourth form of Goddess Durga, Maa Kushmanda, is worshipped. This
form of Shakti is extremely gentle, radiant, and creative. She is considered the primordial power of the universe, creating all of existence with her gentle smile.
The word “Kushmanda” is derived from three Sanskrit words: “ku” meaning small, “ushma” meaning energy or heat, and “anda” meaning cosmic egg. In short, Maa Kushmanda is the Goddess who, through her divine energy and smile, created this”small cosmic egg” (srishti) from nothingness.
Day 4 Navratri : According to the Puranas,,,,,,
when this creation did not exist, there was only darkness everywhere. The void prevailed all around. Amidst this deep darkness, Maa Kushmanda, with her gentle, sweet smile, created a tiny cosmic egg. As the egg hatched, an infinite energy emerged from it, giving birth to the sun, stars, planets, and all living things. Maa Kushmanda is the energy that keeps all creation moving.
Maa Kushmanda’s form is filled with a divine aura and is extremely radiant. She has eight arms, which is why she is also known as the “Ashtabhuja” goddess. Her seven arms hold a kamandalu (water pot), a bow, an arrow, a lotus flower, a pot of nectar, a chakra, and a mace. Her eighth arm holds a rosary,
which has the power to bestow all the “eight siddhis” and “nine treasures” upon her devotees. She rides a resplendent lion, symbolizing righteousness and indomitable courage.
Navratri 2026 : In the path of yoga,
Goddess Kushmanda is associated with the Anahata Chakra, located at the center of the heart. When the Anahata Chakra is awakened, feelings of boundless love, compassion, and gentleness arise within the practitioner.
Maa Kushmanda Puja Vidhi: Just as Maa Kushmanda balances the energy of the universe, meditation in the Anahata Chakra balances the life energy (prana) of the practitioner’s body. This chakra enables the practitioner to hear the Anahata Naad, which leads to self-realization. As she resides in the center of the sun, she dispels the seeker’s inner darkness (ignorance) and fills them with the light of knowledge.
Her gentle smile calms the seeker’s restless mind, enabling deeper meditation. Her energy cures the seeker’s illnesses, radiates the body, and bestows longevity.
In Tantra Shastra, Goddess Kushmanda is also worshipped as an extremely powerful ” Mahavidya.” In Tantra, Goddess Kushmanda is believed to reside at the center of the solar system. Only she possesses the ability to withstand this immense energy and heat. In Tantra practice, she is considered the foundation of the Sun (Surya-Shakti). All ten directions and nine planets are illuminated and operated by her energy.
In Tantra, they are considered the “primordial force” of creation, which creates the universe from nothing. Her Japa Mala has the ability to bestow the eight Siddhis (Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Ishitwa, Vashitwa) on the devotees.
Worshiping Maa Kushmanda is not just a religious ritual, but a means of awakening the creative energy and inner light within us. Her divine smile teaches us how, with balance, patience, and gentleness, we can cultivate positivity in our lives. On this fourth day of Navratri, let us pray to Maa Kushmanda to dispel the darkness from our minds and bless us with wisdom, health, and happiness and prosperity.
