Maa Brahmacharini Chaitra Navratri: The form of Shakti worshipped on the second day of Chaitra Navratri is known as Maa Brahmacharini. This form of the Goddess symbolizes endless penance, boundless patience, and cosmic wisdom. “Brahma” means penance, and “Charini” means one who practices austerity.
Maa Brahmacharini’s form is radiant, serene, and majestic. Unlike other goddesses, she does not ride on a vehicle but instead wanders the earth barefoot, reflecting her simplicity and rigorous austerity. She is dressed in delicate white clothing, symbolizing purity, peace, and wisdom.

Goddess ate only fruits, flowers for 1000 years
Maa Goddess has two arms. In her right hand she holds a rosary (symbolizing constant devotion) and in her left hand she holds a kamandalu (symbolizing water and purity).After being born as Goddess Parvati, at the behest of Narada, she performed rigorous penance for thousands of years to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband. For 1,000 years, she ate only fruits and flowers. For the next 100 years, she ate only vegetables. For several years, she ate only Bilva leaves that had fallen on the ground, and eventually abandoned even those, earning her the name Aparna. Due to her severe penance, she was called Brahmacharini. Finally, Lord Brahma himself appeared and blessed her, declaring her penance successful and that she would become Shiva’s consort.
