Jana Nayagan leak row: Tamil filmmaker Vignesh Shivan on Wednesday expressed anguish over the piracy leak of the final film of Tamil superstar Vijay’s acting career, ‘Jana Nayagan,’ revealing a deeply unsettling encounter that underscored the scale of the breach. Speaking during an interview with BehindWoods, he recalled spotting a leaked version of the movie being watched on a cell phone while he was en route to Madurai Airport. He said the moment left him ‘emotionally shaken.’
He said, “I couldn’t help it. I honestly felt like breaking it right then and there. It hurts that much to see our hard work treated like that.”

Shivan points towards possibility of insider involvement
While raising concerns over the origin of the leak, Shivan suggested that the breach may not be accidental and an ‘insider’ may be purportedly involved behind it. He said that only someone with access could have facilitated such a leak. He further said, “The Jana Nayagan piracy was like death. We don’t know how the industry is going to compensate for it.”
Jana Nayagan leak row: Outrage ensued across the industry over piracy
Notably, the controversy erupted on April 9, 2026, after clips from the film, and in some cases, the entire film began circulating across social media platforms. The film, which is regarded as a farewell project for the Tamil industry ‘Thalapathy,’ quickly became a focal point of industry concern.
Prominent figures from both Tamil and Telugu film industries like Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Sivakarthikeyan, Pooja Hegde and Vijay Deverakonda condemned the film’s leak and called for strict action against the ones responsible.

Meanwhile, production house KVN Productions confirmed that they have initiated criminal proceedings against persons involved in leaking and distributing the film’s content. It also warned that the people engaging with pirated material will also be liable to legal consequences under applicable laws.
